Senior pictures are a milestone that you'll treasure for years to come, and what better place to capture them than the picturesque waterfront in Vancouver, Washington? With stunning views of the Columbia River, beautiful parks, and the iconic bridges, the Vancouver Waterfront offers an ideal setting for your senior photos. To ensure you have a fun, relaxed, and memorable session, here are some tips from a Vancouver photographer on how to prep and feel confident during your shoot.

Scout the Location Ahead of Time

As a Vancouver photographer, one of my favorite things is showing clients around the beautiful waterfront area. To help ease any nerves, I recommend you visit the location a few days before your session. Walk along the river, explore different viewpoints, and get a feel for the surroundings. The more familiar you are with the space, the more comfortable you’ll feel on the day of your shoot. Knowing where you’d like to take photos also gives you the chance to share your ideas with your Vancouver photographer ahead of time.

Plan Your Outfit(s)

Choosing the right outfits is key to feeling good and looking your best in your photos. As a Vancouver photographer, I always suggest wearing something that reflects your personality and style, but also suits the natural beauty of the waterfront setting.

  • Comfort is Key: Choose outfits that allow you to move freely and feel confident. Avoid tight, restrictive clothing that will make you feel uncomfortable as you pose or walk.
  • Colors & Patterns: Soft neutrals, earthy tones, and pastels work beautifully against the natural backdrop of the waterfront. Bold colors can also stand out, but be mindful of busy patterns that may distract from you as the subject.
  • Footwear: Since you may walk on grass, gravel, or near the water, comfortable shoes are essential. Sneakers or flats are great options, but if you want to dress it up, bring a pair of shoes that will stay comfortable and sturdy on uneven ground.

Practice Your Poses

You don’t need to worry about having a set pose for every shot. Your Vancouver photographer will guide you through various poses and angles to make sure you look your best. However, it can help to practice a few natural poses beforehand. Spend a few minutes in front of a mirror practicing relaxed, confident poses—standing tall, sitting comfortably, or walking with ease. This can help you feel more at ease during the session, making it even easier to follow the photographer’s direction when the time comes.

Hydrate and Rest Up

Before your session, make sure to drink plenty of water and get a good night’s sleep. Not only will this help you look fresh, but it will also give you more energy for your shoot. Hydrated, well-rested skin has a natural glow that always looks great on camera, and you’ll feel more focused and relaxed as you work with your Vancouver photographer.

Embrace the Natural Beauty Around You

The Vancouver Waterfront is full of natural beauty, from the sparkling Columbia River to the vibrant parks. Your Vancouver photographer will likely take advantage of the beautiful views by incorporating them into your shots. Whether it’s standing by the water, walking along the paths, or sitting on one of the park benches with the bridges in the background, trust that the natural beauty around you will enhance the experience. Don’t be afraid to embrace the surroundings—relax and let the beauty of the location add to the authenticity of your photos.

Bring Personal Items or Props

To make your senior photos even more meaningful, consider incorporating props that represent your personality or passions. Whether it’s a favorite book, a musical instrument, sports equipment, or something else that’s important to you, props can add a personal touch to your session. A Vancouver photographer will work with you to make sure these items fit seamlessly into your shoot and help tell your unique story.

Let Your Personality Shine

One of the best parts of a senior photo session is capturing your true self. As a Vancouver photographer, I love to help clients feel comfortable enough to show their personality in front of the camera. Whether you're laughing, thinking, or just relaxing by the river, the most memorable photos happen when you're being your authentic self. Don’t worry about perfection—just have fun, and your personality will shine through!

Check the Weather

The weather in Vancouver, WA, can be unpredictable, especially by the water. Make sure to check the forecast ahead of time so you can prepare accordingly. While cloudy days can create a soft, flattering light, you might want to bring an umbrella just in case rain pops up. Your Vancouver photographer will have suggestions for working with various weather conditions, so you can still get stunning photos no matter what the weather is like.
