Getting Comfortable in Front of the Camera for Your Senior Photos

Being in front of a camera can feel awkward, especially if it’s not something you’re used to. As a senior photographer in Vancouver, Washington, I meet people all the time who are a bit unsure about what to expect. Here are a few easy ways to help you feel more relaxed and confident for your session—so your photos show the real, amazing you.

1. Choose an Outfit That Feels Like You

The right outfit can make a huge difference. Instead of focusing on what you “should” wear, pick something that you feel comfortable and confident in. Your outfit should reflect who you are and help you feel at ease. If you love what you’re wearing, that confidence will shine through in your photos.

2. Relax and Trust the Process

It’s totally normal to feel nervous at first, but remember that you don’t have to know anything about posing or angles—that’s my job! Throughout the session, I’ll give you tips and cues to help things feel natural. Once we get started, it’ll feel more like hanging out than being “on camera.”

3. Focus on the Fun

Sometimes we get the best photos when you’re just being yourself, laughing, or thinking about something you love. This session is all about capturing you, not just a perfectly posed picture. Relax and try to enjoy the moment—it’ll make a big difference.

4. Practice Makes Perfect

If you’re really nervous, try practicing a few smiles or poses in front of a mirror at home. Just doing this a couple of times can help you feel more prepared and know what expressions you like best. When the session day comes, it’s one less thing to worry about!

5. Embrace the Unscripted Moments

The best moments often come when you’re not overthinking it. Whether you’re a little shy or totally outgoing, those real, unscripted moments often bring out your true personality. Being present and having a little fun with it can lead to amazing photos you’ll love.

Feeling comfortable in front of the camera takes practice, but the more relaxed you are, the more you will come through in each shot. So, when it’s your time in front of the lens, just breathe, be yourself, and focus on having fun. I’m here to make it a laid-back, enjoyable experience that captures this special time in your life.
