Whether you're graduating from Chiawana High School, Kamiakin High School, Richland High School, Hanford High School, Southridge High School, Kennewick High School, or another school in the Tri-Cities, your senior session should feel relaxed, fun, and completely authentic to you.
One of the first questions I hear from almost every senior is:
"What if I don't know how to pose?"
The answer is simple...
You don't have to.
As a Tri-Cities senior photographer, I guide every part of your session so you never have to wonder where to put your hands, where to look, or how to stand. My goal is to help you feel confident while creating natural, timeless senior portraits you'll love for years to come.
Why Posing Matters During Your Senior Session
The biggest difference between an average senior picture and one that feels magazine-worthy isn't having years of modeling experience.
It's posing.
During your session, I'll walk you through every pose while also encouraging movement so your photos never feel stiff or overly posed.
Instead of saying "Smile," I'll give you prompts that create genuine emotion and natural expressions.
The result is a gallery filled with authentic moments that actually look like you.
1. Shift Your Weight Instead of Standing Straight
One of the quickest ways to improve any portrait is simply shifting your weight onto one leg.
Standing evenly on both feet often creates a stiff posture. By placing your weight on your back leg and slightly bending the front knee, your body naturally creates flattering angles.
This simple adjustment instantly makes your senior portraits feel more relaxed.
2. Keep Your Hands Busy
Hands are usually what make people feel the most awkward during photos.
Instead of letting them hang by your sides, try:
- Holding your jacket
- Running your fingers through your hair
- Holding your graduation cap
- Lightly adjusting a necklace
- Tucking one thumb into a pocket
- Holding a bouquet or sports equipment
Movement makes everything feel more natural.
3. Create Space Between Your Arms and Your Body
When your arms press against your sides, they appear larger than they really are.
Instead, create a little space.
A hand on your hip, a bent elbow, or simply relaxing your arms away from your waist creates a much more flattering shape in every photo.
4. Keep Moving
Some of my favorite senior portraits happen when we're not "posing" at all.
We'll walk.
We'll twirl.
We'll laugh.
We'll dance.
We'll toss your hair.
We'll spin your dress.
Movement creates genuine smiles and helps you forget there's even a camera in front of you.
5. Don't Force Every Smile
Not every senior picture needs a huge smile.
Some of the most beautiful portraits happen when you're simply looking toward the sunset, laughing naturally, or giving a soft smile.
Your gallery should include a variety of expressions that truly reflect your personality.
6. Chin Forward and Slightly Down
This is probably the number one posing tip I give during every session.
Instead of pulling your chin back, gently bring your face slightly toward the camera before lowering your chin just a touch.
It defines your jawline and photographs beautifully from every angle.
7. Wear Outfits That Feel Like You
The best senior pictures happen when you feel comfortable.
Bring outfits that represent different parts of your personality.
Maybe that's:
- A casual everyday outfit
- A dressy outfit
- Your sports uniform
- FFA or rodeo attire
- Letterman's jacket
- Dance or cheer uniform
- College sweatshirt
Your senior session should tell your story.
8. Choose a Beautiful Tri-Cities Location
One of my favorite things about being a Tri-Cities senior photographer is the variety of incredible locations we have nearby.
Some favorite senior photo locations include:
- Howard Amon Park in Richland
- Columbia River waterfront
- Clover Island Lighthouse
- Badger Mountain
- Candy Mountain Preserve
- Columbia Park
- Downtown Kennewick
- Open wheat fields near Pasco
- Vineyards throughout the Tri-Cities
- Wildflower fields in the spring
- Sunset overlooks above the Columbia River
Whether you want golden fields, dramatic cliffs, river views, or downtown architecture, there's a perfect location waiting for your senior session.
9. Trust Your Photographer
The best compliment I receive is when seniors tell me,
"I thought I was going to be awkward, but this was actually so much fun."
That happens because I never expect you to know how to pose.
I'll guide you every step of the way, helping you feel relaxed and confident from the first photo to the last.
10. Celebrate This Once-in-a-Lifetime Season
Senior year goes by incredibly fast.
These photographs become more meaningful with every passing year.
Whether you're heading to college, serving a mission, joining the military, starting a career, or taking a gap year, your senior pictures deserve to capture exactly who you are right now.
That's why I focus on creating timeless images that you'll still love decades from now.
