If you’ve lived in the Pacific Northwest for any amount of time, you know the rain has a mind of its own. As a Vancouver, Washington photographer, I’ve learned that sometimes the drizzle shows up uninvited — like it did during a recent family session at Daybreak Park. But here’s the good news: rain doesn’t have to ruin your photo day. With a few smart tricks (and a little post-editing magic), we can still create stunning, joy-filled images that tell your family’s story beautifully.

1. Embrace a Flexible Schedule

The weather around Vancouver can change by the hour. I always keep an eye on the radar and communicate with my clients as the day approaches. Sometimes we shift the start time, move up the session, or wait out a passing shower — and it almost always works out. Flexibility is key!

2. Come Prepared (Just in Case)

Even when we’re optimistic, it never hurts to bring a few rainy-day essentials:

  • Clear umbrellas (they photograph beautifully!)
  • A cozy blanket to sit on or wrap up in between shots
  • Waterproof shoes for getting to that perfect spot

These little details can make all the difference — and sometimes, the props end up adding charm to the session.

3. Finding the Right Light and Shelter

At Daybreak Park and other local spots, there are plenty of covered or tree-lined areas that give us a little break from the weather while keeping that gorgeous PNW backdrop. I always scout ahead to find spots with great light and protection from drizzle — so you can just show up, relax, and have fun.

4. Don’t Worry About the Raindrops — I’ve Got You in Post

One of the best parts about modern photography? Editing power. If a few rain drops sneak into your photos or the sky looks a little too gray, don’t worry — that’s where I come in. I can remove stray droplets, enhance colors, and even warm up the tones in post-production to make it look like the perfect day.

You just focus on being yourselves and enjoying your time together — I’ll handle the rest behind the scenes.

5. Trust the Process (and Have Fun!)

Some of my favorite images come from less-than-perfect weather. The soft light, the puddle reflections, the laughter as everyone huddles under an umbrella — those moments are pure magic. When you trust me to guide the process, we’ll turn whatever the weather gives us into something beautiful.
