There is something so beautiful about stepping into a family’s world and capturing them exactly as they are—no posing, no pressure, just real life unfolding.

This session was extra special.


As a Vancouver, Washington family photographer, I started a project this year called This Is Us—a way to document families in their element, doing the things that make them them. Not the perfectly curated version of life, but the meaningful, everyday moments that tell a deeper story.


And this family? Their story is movement. It’s rhythm. It’s legacy.


Mom and Dad both grew up dancing with the Portland Ballet and now own the studio that shaped so much of who they are today. Dance isn’t just something they do—it’s woven into their lives, their relationship, and now, the life of their sweet four-year-old daughter.


Watching them together felt like watching something that has been passed down, not just taught.

Their daughter twirled across the floor with the kind of joy only a child has—completely free, completely herself. She watched her parents with admiration, then joined them, mimicking their movements in the most beautiful, innocent way. It wasn’t about perfection. It was about connection.


And that’s what this session was really about.

Not just dance—but family.

The quiet moments in between.

The laughter when things didn’t go quite right.

The way Mom adjusted a tiny ballet shoe.

The way Dad knelt down to meet his daughter at her level.

This is their life.

And it is so worth remembering.


As a Vancouver, Washington family photographer, these are the moments I hope to give back to families—the ones that might seem small now but will mean everything later. The way your child looks at you. The things you love doing together. The rhythm of your everyday life.

Because one day, this season will change.

And these images will bring you right back.
