If you've ever thought, "My kids are never going to cooperate for family pictures," you're in good company. I hear this from parents all the time, and honestly, I don't expect them to sit still!

I'm Jen, the photographer behind Arrows Photography, serving families throughout the Tri-Cities, including West Richland, Richland, Kennewick, and Pasco, Washington. I've been photographing families since 2001, and one thing I've learned over the years is that the best family photos rarely happen when everyone is standing perfectly still and looking at the camera.

I love capturing the movement, personalities, laughter, and little connections that make your family yours. My sessions are relaxed, playful, and guided just enough to help everyone feel comfortable without making the experience feel like a long list of poses.

Whether you have toddlers who would rather explore, kids who can't stop moving, or teenagers who aren't exactly thrilled about family pictures, I want you to enjoy the experience and walk away with photographs that feel like your family.

Here are some of the questions parents often ask when looking for a family photographer in the Tri-Cities.

What do you want families to feel when they arrive for their session?

Prepared, comfortable, and ready to have a good time! I know that getting everyone ready for family pictures can feel like a lot of work. Between coordinating outfits, getting kids fed, and making sure everyone is in a good mood, there's already enough to think about.

That's why I help with the planning ahead of time. I'll share information about locations, clothing, timing, and what to expect so you don't feel like you're figuring everything out on your own.

Once we get started, you can relax and enjoy your family. I'll take care of the rest. What do you want families to feel when they arrive for their session?

My kids never cooperate for photos. What should I do?

Perfect! I don't need them to!

Some of my favorite photographs come from the moments when kids are running, laughing, being silly, or doing something completely unexpected. I use prompts, little games, and movement to help everyone interact naturally.

If your toddler wants to run, your little one wants to be held, or your kids would rather play than look at the camera, that's okay. I'll work with their personalities instead of fighting against them.

I want your children to look like themselves in their photographs. Not a version of themselves who has been told to smile and stand still twenty times.

Do you also offer family films?

Yes! One of the things I love offering through Arrows Photography is the option to add a family film to your photo session.

Photographs are wonderful for freezing a moment, but video lets you experience it again. You can hear the laughter, see the movement, and remember all those little things that make this stage of life so special.

Your family film is created during your regular photo session, so there's no need to prepare differently. I'll move between photography and video while guiding your family through natural interactions and fun moments.

The finished film is a short, beautifully edited keepsake set to licensed music. Depending on your family's personality, it might feel playful and lighthearted or soft and nostalgic.

I love family films because childhood changes so quickly. One day your little one fits perfectly in your arms, and before you know it, they're running off to do their own thing. Photos preserve what they looked like, but a film helps you remember what this season of life actually felt like.

What are you looking for when you're photographing families?

Connection, movement, and genuine expressions.

I'm always watching for those little moments that happen between the traditional poses. The way your child looks up at you, the laughter when Dad tosses someone in the air, the way siblings naturally interact, or the quiet moment when everyone comes together for a hug.

I love creating photographs that feel bright, clean, colorful, and timeless while still capturing real emotion.

Of course, we'll get some beautiful photographs of everyone looking at the camera, too! But I also want to give you the photographs that make you stop and smile because they remind you exactly what your family was like at this moment in time.

What do families love most about working with you?

I think it's the combination of having direction without feeling overly posed.

I won't leave you standing in a field wondering what to do with your hands. I'll guide you with simple prompts and interactions that help everyone relax and connect. At the same time, I leave plenty of room for spontaneous moments and personalities to come through.

I'm also a big believer in making the experience enjoyable for the entire family. You don't need perfectly behaved children or a family full of natural models. You just need to show up, be yourselves, and spend some time together.

My goal is for you to leave thinking, "That was actually fun!"

What makes Arrows Photography different from other Tri-Cities photographers?

I've been doing this for over 10 years, and experience has taught me that beautiful photographs come from more than knowing how to use a camera.

It's knowing how to work with different personalities, finding the best light, anticipating moments, and helping people feel comfortable in front of the camera.

I pay attention to the little details while also keeping the bigger picture in mind. I want your gallery to have a good mix of beautiful portraits, genuine interactions, playful moments, and the little details you'll appreciate even more as the years go by.

I also offer both photography and film, giving families the opportunity to preserve their memories in more than one way.

What kind of locations do you photograph in?

The Tri-Cities has some beautiful locations for family photography, and I love helping families find a setting that fits their style.

Whether you're in West Richland, Richland, Kennewick, or Pasco, there are plenty of options for creating a beautiful gallery. We can find open fields, beautiful natural scenery, river views, parks, or locations with a little more texture and character.

I help you choose a location based on the look you're hoping for, the time of year, and the needs of your family. I also pay close attention to lighting because even the simplest location can look incredible with the right light.

You don't have to show up knowing exactly where you want your photographs taken. That's something I can help you figure out!

Why do you love shooting at golden hour?

Golden hour is that beautiful window of time shortly before sunset when the light becomes soft, warm, and flattering.

I love using natural light creatively, whether that's backlighting a family with the sun shining through the trees or finding beautiful open light that gives photographs a clean, timeless look.

But beautiful photographs aren't limited to sunset. I also enjoy working with direct sunlight, open shade, and overcast skies. The key is knowing how to use the light that's available.

What has more than 10 years of experience taught you about photographing families?

Probably the biggest lesson is that the moments you think you need to plan aren't always the ones you'll treasure most.

I've learned to be patient, flexible, and comfortable letting things unfold. Kids have their own ideas, toddlers have their own schedules, and sometimes the best photographs happen when we stop trying to make everything perfect.

I've also learned just how quickly these seasons of life pass. The little things that feel ordinary today often become the things you miss the most later.

That's one of the reasons I love what I do. I get to help families preserve memories they might not even realize they'll want to look back on someday.

How do you help parents relax during family pictures?

A lot of it starts before the session. I provide guidance on clothing, locations, timing, and what to expect so you feel prepared before you arrive.

During the session, I'll give you direction when you need it and step back when things are naturally unfolding. I use prompts and games to keep kids engaged and help parents feel less awkward in front of the camera.

And most importantly, I want you to know that nothing has to go perfectly. Someone might need a snack break, a little one might need time to warm up, or we might have to change directions halfway through.

That's all part of working with real families!

How would you describe your editing and photography style?

I'd describe my style as bright, clean, colorful, and timeless.

I love beautiful natural light, true-to-life skin tones, and colors that feel rich without being overly processed. I want your photographs to look polished and professional while still feeling natural.

My goal is to create images you'll love today and still love looking at twenty years from now.

What three words describe your photographs?

Connection, movement, and emotion.

I want my photographs to show more than what your family looked like. I want them to remind you how it felt to be together.

What would you want someone searching for a Tri-Cities family photographer to know?

You don't need to be a perfectly coordinated, perfectly behaved family to have beautiful photographs.

You don't need kids who sit still, parents who know how to pose, or everyone smiling at the exact same time.

You just need to be willing to spend some time together and let me help with the rest.

My family sessions are designed to capture a combination of natural interactions, beautiful portraits, and genuine moments. I'll guide you throughout the session so you never feel lost or unsure of what to do.

Whether we're photographing your family in West Richland, along the Columbia River, or at one of the beautiful locations around the Tri-Cities, my goal is always the same: to create photographs that feel personal, meaningful, and true to your family.

What do you hope families take away from their photographs?

I hope they walk away with more than just a gallery of pretty pictures.

I hope they see the little personalities, the relationships, the laughter, and the connections that make their family special. I hope they remember how small their children were, how they used to laugh, and all the little things that made this particular season of life theirs.

Because someday, these photographs won't just be family pictures. They'll be memories of a time you can never get back.

And those are photographs you'll never regret taking.
